Coincidences By Rodger Harrison, President, Paramedics For Children

Little Nelly was fighting for her life. The diarrhea had taken it's toll. Nelly was severely dehydrated, and very close to going into full cardiac arrest. The only thing that would save her now was high flow oxygen, combined with a rapid fluid infusion. As I looked down at the child I said a silent prayer, and wondered if we were too late.
First came the oxygen followed by an IV. As we watched, the convulsions began to slow down, and her heart rate returned to normal. It was close. Too close!

It was at this point we all breathed a sigh of relief. Now at least the child had a fighting chance. As I watched the oxygen slowly hiss into her face mask, and observed her IV to see if it was running correctly, I couldn't help but remember, that until our last trip to Honduras this clinic didn't have any oxygen or IV solutions. I recalled making the long hot trip into San Pedro Sula to purchase the Oxygen tank, and lifting, and unloading the many heavy boxes of donated IV solutions from the cargo plane. I remember how tired we all were at the end of that day. But now, I could see, and understand what it was all about. Now because of our efforts and a string of coincidences a little girl was going to live.

That was when the coincidental "what ifs" started to hit me. What if Paramedics For Children had not been there to help, or our supporters hadn't donated the money, or medical supplies. What if nobody cared, or the child had come to the clinic before we had the supplies we needed. The answer to all of these questions hit me hard. With out our intervention Nelly would be dead today.
I am happy to report that little Nelly is doing much better. She responded well to the treatment, and has returned to her home in the mountains outside of Copan Ruinas, She still suffers from malnutrition, and needs some follow up therapy. Will we ever see her again? I don't know. This little girl still needs a lot of help. She needs the help that can only come from donated medical and food supplies, willing volunteers, and generous contributions.

We have wonderful donations of ambulances, medical supplies and willing volunteers, but always lack enough funds to get the supplies to the children. We don't need a lot. A small donation on your part can go a long way towards helping a child like Nelly.

This is why we invite you to make your donation today. If only a little, each donation adds up. Say you will make that donation today, because for each child we save more are doomed to perish with out your ongoing support.

Please help us to help the children of Honduras.
