The Mayatan Bilingual School
![]() |
The Mayatan Bilingual School is a nonprofit elementary school with classes in English accompanied by some Spanish instruction. The school was founded in 1991 by a local woman who wanted to provide a bilingual education for her children. The school offers classes from the nursery level to Grade 7. With just over 100 students the average class size is 10-12 students. |
| The Teachers: The teachers are native English speaking from both the United States as well as Canada, and most all of them are university graduates with educational backgrounds. Our Students: The children attending the school are all local Hondurans. Economical backgrounds of these children are varied due mainly to our scholarship program, which allows many low income families to pay partial on no tuition. |
|
| Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: In a country where the average daily wage is under $3 US dollars per day, it is no wonder that few families can afford any type of quality education for their children. Children whose families can't afford to educate them join the local work force at a very early age. There are no child labor laws here. In Honduras a quality bilingual education is the ticket to a better life for these children. Without it, the cycle of poverty and ignorance continues. |
| The Mayatan Scholarship Program: Our mission is to be able to offer a bilingual education to all the children of Copan. These goals are only possible through the contributions of our Scholarship sponsors. These scholarship sponsors are people like yourself who choose to donate their time, money, or school supplies. Currently about one-third of our children are being helped through the generosity of scholarship sponsors. | How Can You Help? Become a scholarship sponsor, and help us to help the children of Honduras have a brighter future. A full scholarship involves a commitment of $50 US dollars per month, and provides all the tuition, supplies, uniforms, and books necessary for a child to attend. |
